Fun Fact: All six of our kids have birthdays in May-August. This means that “birthday season” is kicking off at our house. We actually aren’t doing big birthday gifts or parties this year, but instead we are taking all the kids on a summer trip and celebrating with activities instead of gifts. Even though that is what we are doing, I wanted to share some birthday ideas for all the birthday parties that you might be attending this summer!
My son is turning 8 on Saturday, and my husbands son will be turning 8 just three weeks after that! Earlier this month I wrote a post about 5 year old birthday gift ideas, so make sure to check that out too! All of the items listed are from Amazon, although you can purchase most of them anywhere. Generally speaking, I have found that Amazon has better prices than Wal-Mart or Target, unless Target is having a good toy sale. If you don’t currently have Amazon Prime, you can try it for free for 30 days. Use this link to get your Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial.
If you’re on the fence about Amazon Prime, make sure to check out my post about how to get the most out of your Amazon Prime subscription and then sign up for the trial. There are so many things included that most people don’t know about!

My son is obsessed with Pokemon right now. He “battles” with my husbands 10 year old all the time, so these may be good gifts for slightly older kids too. I have found that Amazon has better prices on Pokemon sets than Wal-Mart or Target. I found a Charizard EX box and a Krookodile EX box for $5-$10 cheaper than what you’ll find elsewhere. If you’re not sure what cards a Pokemon-lover already has, why not try a gift like a binder to hold cards or a collector’s chest.
If you’re looking for a practical non-toy gift, why not buy your 8 year old some books? I found a fun Pokemon Handbook that I know my 8 year old would love. We also have a Star Wars Encyclopedia that is a huge hit around our house. I also found some Jurassic World books that I think most 8 year old’s would love.
For 8 year old birthday gift ideas, video game accessories are probably a good choice! If the 8 year old is into any character games like Skylanders, Lego Dimensions, or Disney Infinity, new characters would probably be very welcome. If they like video games but don’t have any of these yet, the Starter Packs have become much more affordable. We have both Skylanders and Lego Dimensions in our house and the kids really love them.
One of my favorite 8 year old birthday gift ideas is LEGOs. Most boys and girls love LEGO. Some of my favorites for this age range are this Elsa’s Sparkling Ice Castle and this Minecraft Ender Dragon. We bought the Ender Dragon last year and the boys loved it. Star Wars LEGO sets are a favorite around here as well.
I hope that this will help if you’re looking for 8 year old birthday gift ideas! Do you have a lot of birthday parties to attend this summer? Have you ever tried doing a trip or another special event instead of a party or gifts? If so, I’d love to hear about your experience!
