How to save on a moving truck
Renting a truck to haul your stuff is one of the biggest expenses that comes along with moving. Fortunately, there are a few tips on how to save on a moving truck that you can use if you’re planning a move.
First of all, I have to say that I have had a bad experience with U-Haul a few years ago. I actually wrote several reviews as well as a blog post. U-Haul not have the truck that I reserved weeks in advance, and they were also horribly rude. The customer service was awful, and I didn’t want to rent a U-Haul truck again. I promise this isn’t a post to complain about that experience, but I do want to warn my readers about it because I don’t want anyone to have to deal with what I dealt with. When you think of moving trucks, you probably think of U-Haul first, so I started looking into other options.
The best tip to save on a rental truck
The best piece of advice that I can give you is not to rent more truck than you need. As I mentioned in my 9 moving tips for a stress free move post, the best thing to do is have a big yard sale prior to moving. Get rid of anything that you don’t want to keep, and don’t haul it! The price of a moving truck goes up as the truck goes bigger, so if you can go for a truck that isn’t the biggest, you will automatically save money. The savings can be as much as $200, that is a big chunk of change!
I did some price comparison and I decided to rent our moving truck through Budget Trucks. I don’t have any kind of affiliation with them, so I am not recommending them for any reason other than they have the best price that I could find. I also went through Ebates to get 2.5% cash back! It doesn’t sound like much, but it was around $10 for me and every little bit adds up. If you aren’t using Ebates yet, make sure to check out my Guide to Ebates. It only takes a few seconds to sign up and the cash back is available within a day or two! I also did a quick google search for a coupon code, and got an extra 20% off. I recommend always doing a quick search to see if you can find a discount code when purchasing anything online.
The best part about the rental from Budget trucks is that you get the truck for 3 days. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to move in 24 hours (what most truck rentals offer) but it is very stressful. We got the truck for three days, plus unlimited miles. The unlimited miles is important to use because we are moving to a different state. The pickup location is almost an hour away, but the drop-off location is very close to our new home. We currently live in a rural area, so the pickup location isn’t a problem for us. If you live in a city, you can probably find a pickup location much closer.
So that’s it! That is all that I did, and I managed to save almost $100 plus get about $10 cash back! It only took a couple of minutes and some quick comparison shopping. If you’re planning a move, I definitely suggest checking out Budget Trucks and going through Ebates for a little extra cash back. If you’ve moved recently, or are planning a move, I’d love to hear some of your best tips! What have you done to save money on your move? Tell me about it in the comments.
