7 reasons to start a mom blog today
Before I talk about the reasons to start a mom blog, I want to tell you a story. When I started this blog in 2016, I did not want to have a mom blog. I had a “mom blog” from 2009-2013 and I wanted to do something different. I wanted to write about simplifying life, healthy living, saving money, but I didn’t want it to be considered a mom blog. I signed up for a Peek User Test and the person testing said “Oh, it’s another mom blog.” I was horrified!
Fast forward to the next year. I realized that my readers were moms. I realized that my posts that were doing well were, for the most part, parenting related. Whether I wanted to or not, I had a mom blog. So I embraced it. There’s nothing wrong with having a “mom blog.” Some of the most popular blogs are indeed, mom blogs. I think that there are a lot of misconceptions about what a mom blog is, and isn’t. We’ll talk about those too. So why should you start a mom blog? Here are 7 reasons to start a mom blog today.

What a mom blog is (and what it isn’t)
Your mom blog can be exactly what you want it to be. When some people think of “mom blogs” they might think of someone simply chronicling their entire day. While you certainly can do that, most successful mom blogs are usually written with the reader in mind. What can you write about that will make your readers lives easier? What kind of knowledge can you share? You might share a personal story of something that happened with your kids, and what you learned from it, so that your readers can benefit from your learning experience.
So, what are the 7 reasons to start a mom blog now?
1. To look back on your adventures in mom life
Things go by really, really fast. It might not seem like it in the moment, but one day you’ll look back and your babies won’t be babies anymore. My youngest is 4. I don’t even know when that happened! This is an excellent reason to have a mom blog.
2. To share with family who live far away
If you don’t live close to family, your blog and social media can be great way to connect with them and let them know what’s going on in your life. I realize that there is a level of anonymity that we all need online. If you don’t want to share pictures or details of your kids on your blog, that’s completely fine! You can always create a private Facebook group or something similar for family members, or create videos just for family.
Creating a YouTube channel is another great way for family and friends to see your kids grow. You can tie it into your blog if you want, or keep it private.
3. To share what you’ve learned along the way
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been asked a lot of mom questions by a lot of different people. I started having kids a little younger than most of my friends, which meant lots of questions for me! I was asked about cloth diapering, baby led weaning, and other parenting issues frequently! If this happens to you, it’s really easy to share a blog post instead of answering the same questions over and over!
If you’re an expert in food allergies, create a blog! There are other allergy moms with newly diagnosed kids who could really use your expertise! Maybe you are an expert on babywearing, you can create a blog based around that. Whatever your skill set, there is something for you to share with other moms out there.
Here are some examples of posts that I wrote after being asked about the topic many times:
- How to get kids to do chores
- How to wash cloth diapers
- Top survey sites to make money
- How to save on a Hawaii vacation
Think of a question that someone has asked you related to parenting. Have you been asked that question multiple times? Chances are, there are lots of other people out there who could benefit from your knowledge.
4. To have an outlet or a new hobby
As a mom, sometimes you just need time to yourself to do things that you enjoy. If you enjoy writing, having a blog can be a great outlet and a hobby. Web design, graphic creation, making and editing videos are all things that you can do as an outlet, while growing your blog.
5. To make extra money
…eventually! Blogging isn’t a way to get rich quick. In fact, it’s a way to work really, really hard and eventually make a side income (or possibly full time income) after you’ve put in a lot of blood, sweat and tears. This is why it’s best to start blogging as a hobby. If it’s something you enjoy, you’ll stick with it! The money will come, eventually, and it can be a great way to contribute to your family finances.
You do need to spend money before you make money, but fortunately it isn’t very much! Make sure to check out two things to pay for when you start a blog, for the absolute must haves. Don’t worry, neither cost very much at all!
6. To create a following and a platform
If you have dreams of writing a book, creating a course, or almost anything else, blogging is a great way to build a following. Every single person that you reach through your blog, email list, and social media is someone who may potentially want to read your book, take your course, or share it with someone else who might.
Blogging is a great way to create a platform and a presence online.
7. To set goals and hold yourself accountable
If you blog about personal finance, you’re definitely going to want to hold yourself accountable. Blogging about health? I bet you’ll make more of an effort to be healthier in your own life. Having a blog is a great way to keep your own goals in check, and hold yourself accountable. You can even create challenges to build your email list, or sell a product, while following the challenge your self.
