Do you need a passport for Hawaii?
Do you need a passport for Hawaii? While some might think this is a dumb question, it’s actually extremely common. As a Hawaii travel agent, I’m often asked this question. So, let’s get to it.
You do not need a passport to go to Hawaii if you are a US citizen. If you’re asking questions like this, you might need a travel agent! Contact me now; I’d love to help you plan your Hawaii vacation and answer all your questions along the way.
If you’re a citizen of another country, of course, you need a passport, as usual, to travel in/out of your home country. Although it’s a touchy subject, Hawaii is technically part of the US, so US citizens do not need a passport to visit.

Important Note: Eventually, you will need either Real ID OR a passport to fly, but that keeps getting delayed. For now, a regular driver’s license or photo ID will do!

Here are a few other frequently asked questions about Hawaii:
Does Hawaii have all-inclusive resorts?
Hawaii does NOT have all-inclusive resorts. If you are seeing all-inclusive pricing offered, please note that it is not the same as something you’d find in Mexico or the Caribbean. Hawaii does not have all-inclusive resorts. If you see an “all-inclusive” rate, read the fine print.
Some resorts have meal packages, but even breakfast is not standard at Hawaii resorts. I am often available to get rates that include breakfast that may not be available elsewhere, so contact me if you’d like to learn more about working together.

Do I need to fly into Oahu/Honolulu?
No. If you visit another island, such as Maui or Kauai, you can easily fly directly to that island from many US airports.
Are there boats that go between the islands?
No. You’ll take a regular plane on Hawaiian Airlines or Southwest Airlines. There is a smaller local airline called Mokulele Airlines that has smaller planes. However, most people will fly on a regular-size plane via Hawaiian or Southwest.

What are tipping customs in Hawaii?
Tipping is the same as anywhere else in the US. 15-20% is pretty standard for restaurants and bars.
Why do hotels in Hawaii have resort fees?
Almost all hotels in Hawaii have resort fees. Make sure to factor that in when planning your budget. Also, take advantage of what is offered within your resort fee because sometimes it’s quite a bit! For example, the Andaz Maui resort fee includes many activities from kayaking to yoga and more.
