1. Tunnels Beach (Makua Beach)

Tunnels Beach, also known as Makua Beach, is easily one of the best places to snorkel in Kauai. Located on Kauai’s North Shore, this beach is famous for its coral reefs and underwater lava tubes.

The inner reef offers calm waters suitable for beginners, while the outer reef provides deeper waters for more experienced snorkelers. Please take all necessary precautions and check the weather as the water can be rough, especially during the winter months. 

2. Ke’e Beach

Ke’e Beach marks the end of the road along Kauai’s North Shore and serves as the gateway to the Napali Coast. The beach features a protected lagoon with calm waters, making it ideal for snorkeling.

The backdrop of the Napali Coast cliffs makes it one of the prettiest places to snorkel in Kauai. Be mindful of the strong currents outside the reef; staying within the protected area is best.

3. Po’ipū Beach Park

Located on Kauai’s sunny South Shore, Poipu Beach Park is a family-friendly destination known for its calm waters and abundant marine life. The beach features a natural rock barrier that creates a sheltered cove, perfect for snorkeling. 

You’ll often encounter Hawaiian green sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals.  Poipu Beach offers restrooms, showers, and picnic areas. It’s a popular spot, so arriving early can help you secure a good spot.

4. Anini Beach

Anini Beach is known for its calm and clear waters, making it a great spot for snorkeling. The beach features one of the longest reefs in Hawaii, providing ample opportunities to explore marine life. 

This beach also has picnic tables, restrooms, and showers. 

5. Lāwaʻi Beach

Lawai Beach is a small, secluded beach located near the Beach House Restaurant on Kauai’s South Shore. The beach is protected by a barrier reef, creating calm waters ideal for snorkeling. 

The beach can disappear during high tide; visiting during low tide ensures better access to the water.

6. Lydgate Beach Park

Lydgate Beach Park is also located on Kauai’s East Shore. The beach features a man-made barrier reef that creates a calm lagoon, ideal for snorkeling. The waters are shallow and protected, making it a great spot for beginners and families with children.

The park offers restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and a playground. It’s a popular spot, so arriving early is advised.

7. Salt Pond Beach Park

Salt Pond Beach Park is a local gem located on Kauai’s south shore, near the town of Hanapepe. This town is the home of Lilo and Stitch!

The beach is known for its shallow pools, making it ideal for families with young children and beginners. The waters are calm and clear, providing excellent snorkeling opportunities.

The park is also known for its rich culture, as families nearby practice the art of making Hawaiian salt, a tradition passed down through generations. It’s a great spot for those looking to experience both snorkeling and local culture.
