DO I NEED A RENTAL CAR IN Hawaii?

You’ll definitely need a car on most islands in Hawaii. Public transportation isn’t very reliable anywhere other than Oahu, so you need a car to get around. You’ll find the best prices anywhere at Discount Hawaii Car Rental.

Here’s a quick overview of the main islands (from northwest to southeast): Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and Hawaii Island (often called the Big Island).

Ni’ihau is a privately owned island, so you won’t be able to visit it. You may also notice Kaho’olawe, which is near Maui.

This island was used for target practice during WWII, and you are not allowed to visit due to the continued danger of unexploded ordnance. However, you will get a closer look at the island on a Molokini Crater snorkeling tour!

How the Islands Were Formed

Hawaii’s iconic landscape is due to its volcanic origins. Millions of years ago, underwater volcanic activity created these islands, and some—like the Big Island—are still growing today!

The Layout of the Islands

Oahu is the hub of modern Hawaii with the bustling city of Honolulu, sitting near the center of the chain.
Maui, Lanai, and Molokai form the “Maui Nui” group, a collection of islands once connected by lower sea levels.
The Big Island anchors the southeastern end of the chain, while Kauai and Niihau rest quietly in the northwest.

There are actually 137 total islands, islets, and atolls in Hawaii. All the others are north of these islands and uninhabited. Today, we will focus on the main islands of Hawaii!

Let’s start with the Big Island, officially known as Hawaii Island, and for good reason—it’s the largest in the Hawaiian archipelago, larger than all the other main islands combined!

Active Volcanoes: The Big Island is home to two active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kīlauea, both of which are located in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.
Diverse Climates: Within just a few hours of driving, you can travel through 10 of the world’s 14 climate zones!
Manta Ray Snorkeling: You won’t see this unique evening activity just anywhere, the Big Island offers a unique experience to snorkel with manta rays.
Different colored beaches: The Big Island has one of only four green sand beaches in the world, plus many black sand beaches (more than any other island in Hawaii).

Punalu’u Black Sand Beach is a beautiful beach and one of the best places to find sea turtles on the Big Island.

Known as the “Valley Isle,” Maui is a paradise for travelers seeking a blend of adventure, natural beauty, and luxurious relaxation. It’s a favorite for honeymooners, families, and outdoor enthusiasts alike because it offers something for everyone. This is the most popular island (or at least tied with Oahu) for U.S. visitors.

Unique Features of Maui

Haleakalā National Park: This massive shield volcano offers one of the most spectacular sunrises on Earth and one of the best things to do in Maui.
The Road to Hana: A scenic drive with 600 hairpin turns, 59 bridges, and countless breathtaking stops, including waterfalls, black sand beaches, and lush rainforests.
Whale Watching: Maui is one of the best places in the world to see humpback whales. During winter, whales migrate to Maui’s warm waters to breed and give birth. Don’t miss a whale-watching tour if visiting in the winter.

Molokai

Molokai, “The Friendly Isle,” is a haven of unspoiled beauty and a stronghold of Hawaiian culture.

The Big Island: Ideal for adventurers and nature enthusiasts with its volcanoes, diverse climates, and stargazing opportunities. The black sand beaches and green sand beaches are a must-see. Downside: Lots of driving!
Maui: Perfect for those seeking a mix of luxury, natural beauty, and iconic experiences like the Road to Hana and Haleakalā. Plus, some of the best snorkeling in Hawaii! Downside: Sometimes, pricing can be higher.
Oahu: Great for visitors who want a blend of city life, historic landmarks, and stunning beaches. This is the only island where you’ll find true nightlife. Downside: TRAFFIC, crowds, and more traffic.
Kauai: Best for nature lovers and those looking for peace, with its lush landscapes and the best hiking in all of Hawaii. Downside: Fewer places to stay, not many indoor activities.

Is it easy to island hop in Hawaii?

Some assume that island-hopping in Hawaii is simple, but it really isn’t. There is a ferry between Maui and Lanai, but other islands require air travel.

Thanks to driving distance to the airport, arriving early, TSA wait times, the flight itself (about 45 minutes,) getting a rental car, and getting to your next location, it can easily take 5-6 hours!

I don’t say this to deter you from island-hopping, but please know that it will take time, and multiple islands are not always the best plan if there are small children, older adults, or anyone who doesn’t want to feel like you are constantly moving.
