Hyatt Regency Maui Review
Today, I am going to share a Hyatt Regency Maui Review. This is one of my favorite resorts in all of Hawaii and my favorite in Maui for families. I send a lot of honeymooners here, too, but if you have the budget, you might enjoy a quieter experience at a smaller resort such as Hotel Wailea or the Andaz Maui.
Hyatt Regency Maui has everything you could ask for in a beachfront Maui resort. It offers fantastic pools, spectacular views, great restaurants, friendly staff, updated rooms, and penguins. Yes, penguins! Seven African Black-footed penguins reside at the resort and are one of the main attractions.
The Hyatt Regency Maui is a mid-size resort, which means it has plenty of restaurants and amenities, but you won’t spend all of your time walking just to get around the resort. If you’d like to learn how a travel agent can add more value to your trip, contact me and let’s get started!
If you don’t have a rental car yet, I recommend Discount Hawaii Car Rental. This is my go-to for rental cars on Maui. Trust me, you’ll want a rental car in Maui! You can rent one directly at the resort, but you’ll save yourself a lot of time and money by having one from the beginning of your trip.
Overview of the Hyatt Regency Maui
The Hyatt Regency Maui has been open since 1980 but underwent a massive remodel in 2020. The resort looks brand new and is one of the best resorts in Maui. As a Hawaii Travel Agent, this is one where my clients stay the most.
If you love pools, the Hyatt Regency Maui has some of the best pools in Hawaii. You’ll also find an abundance of wildlife that call the Hyatt Regency home. From penguins to birds of all varieties, kids and adults alike will enjoy the beautiful gardens and wildlife.
The Hyatt Regency Maui has an onsite luau and several restaurants, including the popular Son’z Steakhouse. If you want to venture outside the resort, there are plenty of other restaurants nearby.
Overall, the Hyatt Regency Maui is perfect for almost any type of vacation due to the amenities, location, and, of course, the friendly staff!
Location
The Hyatt Regency Maui (not to be confused with the Hyatt Regency Waikiki – which is on a different island!) is located on 40 oceanfront acres on Ka’anapali Beach. You’ll fly into the airport in Kahului, which is about a 45-minute drive from the Ka’anapali area.
I love the west side of Maui for winter vacations, as the West Maui channel is one of the most common areas to spot whales. You might even spot whales right off your lanai.
As with any other Hawaii vacation, I recommend that you rent a car. Otherwise, you’ll miss out on so much that Maui has to offer!
You may notice that the Hyatt Regency has a Lahaina address. It is located on the west side of Maui and was briefly closed after the devastating fires of 2023. However, the Hyatt Regency is open again, welcoming guests with open arms. All photos from this blog post are from a post-fire stay.
Rooms at Hyatt Regency Maui
Hyatt Regency Maui has 806 guest rooms and 31 suites. Rooms and suites have private lanais with views of the resort, West Maui mountains, and/or the ocean.
This is a king-corner room. My clients love these rooms, and I book them often! It’s a bit larger than your typical king room. All rooms (along with the entire resort) were completely renovated during the closures of 2020. The new decor is beautiful and welcoming.

The beach at Hyatt Regency Maui
Hyatt Regency Maui is located at the very south point of Ka’anapali Beach. You may see reviews complaining about how narrow the beach is, and due to erosion, it is narrow right in front of the resort. However, you can walk 7 minutes up the beach (I timed it) to the wider part of Kaanapali Beach. Or, you can walk south to Hanakao’o Park, which is even closer.
Here is a drone shot of the beach. Check out the video above for even more beach info.
Why you’ll love staying on Ka’anapali Beach
Kaanapali Beach is a paradise of sun, pristine white sand, and surf. The beach offers a perfect blend of relaxation and recreation, with opportunities for sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, and even cliff diving.
Kaanapali is not only celebrated for its natural beauty but also for its vibrant atmosphere. The beach is lined with upscale resorts – like the Hyatt Regency Maui – shopping centers and restaurants, making it a hub of activity and a perfect destination for those seeking a balance between tranquility and entertainment.
The daily cliff diving ceremony off the famous Black Rock adds a touch of cultural significance to the beach experience, creating lasting memories for visitors who come to indulge in the sheer magnificence of Kaanapali Beach.
Restaurants at the Hyatt Regency Maui
The Hyatt Regency Maui has several onsite restaurants, including an onsite luau. You don’t have to wander far from the resort to find more of the best places to eat in Maui.
The restaurants at Hyatt Regency Maui include:
Japengo:
Japengo offers a fusion of Asian and island-inspired cuisine at Japengo. We still haven’t managed to eat here, maybe next time! Several of my clients have and have only told me good things!
‘Umalu:
Umalu offers poolside cuisine (think burgers) and also has tropical drinks in the evenings. My boyfriend had some food here and said it was good. Nothing outstanding, but good!
Swan Court Breakfast
During my last stay, we had breakfast at Swan Court. I am often able to find rates where breakfast is included for barely more than a regular rate, so make sure to reach out if you’d like to have breakfast included!
Swan Court is a good breakfast buffet and has plenty of options for those with allergies or special diets.
Son’z Steakhouse
At night, the Swan Court is turned into Son’z Steakhouse, one of the best restaurants in Maui! If a steakhouse is on your “must do” list for things to do in Maui, you won’t even have to leave the resort.
Honolulu Coffee
There is a Honolulu Coffee right onsite at the Hyatt Regency, where you can get smoothes and acai bowls in addition to your morning coffee.
Drums of the Pacific Luau
Immerse yourself in the Drums of the Pacific luau and dinner for an authentic experience. Receive a warm welcome with a lei and a cocktail, accompanied by the captivating sounds of conch, beating drums, and Hawaiian chants.
Throughout the night, explore the rich cultures of the Polynesian islands, featuring a traditional imu ceremony, the tantalizing flavors of Hawaii, an open bar, and a delightful dessert experience.
Regency Club at Hyatt Regency Maui
I highly recommend booking a room with Regency Club Access included. This is particularly handy if you have kids!
The Regency Club is located in the Lobby Level of the Lahaina Tower. Here, you can enjoy continental breakfast, afternoon snacks (things like chips, cookies, soda, and juice), beverages, and evening hor d’oeuvres.
Spa Soleil and boutique
The Spa Soleil and Boutique at the Hyatt Regency offers everything you need to spend a day relaxing and being pampered. The spa offers facials, massages, waxing, manicures and pedicures, and even a variety of body therapies.
If you’re planning a wedding at Hyatt Regency Maui, Spa Soleil and Boutique offers bridal packages, including hair and makeup.
The fitness center is very large and has more equipment than most hotel gyms.
Pools and Amenities at Hyatt Regency Maui
If you love pools, you’ll love the Hyatt Regency Maui! There are six pools in total, including an adults-only pool. You’ll find waterfalls, a grotto with a pool bar, waterslides, and so much more!
Hyatt Regency Maui is one of only four Maui resorts that have swim-up bars!
The pools at the Hyatt Regency Maui are often mentioned in “best pools in Hawaii” lists. You’ll also find quieter areas, like the grotto pool bar or some of the hot tubs.
Relaxing in a quiet hot tub.
You’ll find many activities included in your $45/night resort fee. Some of them include:
- Oceanfront gym
- Yoga and fitness classes daily
- Lei making, lawn games, hula lessons, mermaid story time, wildlife tours, penguin presentations and koi feedings
- Fresh flower lei upon arrival
- Two in-room prefilled reusable water bottles, filtered water, and ice machines are available throughout the resort.
- Ka’anapali Trolley shuttle service within the hotel and golf resort
- Unlimited tennis, pickle ball, or basketball court time (tennis/pickle balls, racquets, and basketballs included)
Weddings or Meetings
The Hyatt Regency Maui offers over 100,000 square feet of event or wedding space. If you’re planning a destination wedding in Maui or any other event, it would be a fantastic place to do it. I book destination weddings and other events regularly, so reach out to me, and let’s chat about working together.
Pet-friendly hotel in Maui
The Hyatt Regency Maui is a pet-friendly hotel with some rules, but do keep in mind that bringing your furry friends isn’t as easy as hopping on a plane with them! I have an entire blog post about taking a dog to Hawaii, where you can learn more.
More things to do in Maui
As a Hawaii Travel Agent, I’m often asked about the best things to do in Maui. Here are some of my favorites:
- 27 Things to Do on Maui in July
- The ultimate guide to the Road to Hana
- The Best Maui Snorkeling Guide
- 100 things to do in Hawaii (Hawaii Bucket List)
- Snorkeling Molokini Crater, is it worth it?
