Westin Hapuna Beach Review
Welcome to this Westin Hapuna Beach Review. Westin Hapuna Beach is part of Mauna Kea Resort, which encompasses Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and Westin Hapuna Beach Resort. These are two of my favorite resorts on the Big Island!
As of 2024, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is undergoing major renovations (which I am so excited about!), so today, we will focus on Westin Hapuna Beach.
When renovations are finished with Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in 2025, I’ll share a brand new blog post for that resort!

Overview of Westin Hapuna Beach
Westin Hapuna Beach is an upscale, family-friendly property located on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island, which is the primary resort area on the Island. Westin Hapuna Beach has 232 rooms and 17 suites. The entire property underwent a significant renovation in 2018 and was named a Westin Property.

Depending on traffic, Westin Hapuna Beach is about 30 minutes from the airport and about 45 minutes north of Kona.
Of course, you’ll need a car on the Big Island. It’s not possible to easily get around without one. You’ll find the best pricing at Discount Hawaii Car Rentals. The Big Island is a place to explore; everything is spread out, and public transportation is inconsistent. Trust me, you need the car!
The rooms at Westin Hapuna Beach
Westin Hapuna Beach offers various accommodation options. Since the resort is ocean-facing, every room has a partial ocean view. Room categories range from partial ocean view to ocean front, and suites are available in a variety of options and view types.

The pools at Westin Hapuna Beach
There are two pools at Westin Hapuna Beach. The Family Pool is on a lower deck next to Meridia and Napauka Beach Side Grill.
The adult pool is above the Family Pool, giving both pools stunning views of Hapuna Beach. Both pools have their own lounge areas and hot tubs.

Restaurants at Westin Hapuna Beach
This resort has four restaurants and several others nearby at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. I’ll give an overview of all of them below. If you don’t want to stay on-property, there are plenty of other restaurants nearby.
Ikena Landing:
This open-air breakfast-only restaurant offers sweeping views of the ocean and coastline.
Naupaka Grill
Located next to the family pool, this restaurant is open all day and is the only lunch restaurant on-property.
Meridia
Mediterranean cuisine and only open for dinner. This is one of my go-to’s for a special dinner for those celebrating an anniversary, birthday, honeymoon, etc.

Piko Coffee and Bar
Located in the lower level below the lobby, this is a great place to grab your morning coffee or tea. There are also some food items and, best of all, incredible views!

Spa and fitness at Westin Hapuna Beach
Westin is a wellness-centered brand, so you’ll find many wellness-themed treatments in the spa. The fitness center also offers more equipment than many other resorts, including squat racks.

The fitness room was pretty busy, so I wasn’t able to get much of the equipment, but we show a bit more in our YouTube video tour of the Westin Hapuna Beach.
Even the in-room dining has some healthy options, which isn’t typical for resorts.

The beach at Westin Hapuna Beach
If you look for “best beaches on the Big Island,” Hapuna Beach always makes the list and is usually #1. Many of the resorts on Hawaii Island (The Big Island) are not beachfront, even if they are oceanfront, but Westin Hapuna Beach is the exception.
If staying on a great beach is important to you, I can’t recommend Westin Hapuna Beach enough.

Pros and cons of Westin Hapuna Beach
There are very few cons at the Westin Hapuna Beach. I’ll list those first and then go to the (much longer) list of pros.
Cons:
- Resort fee (standard in Hawaii)
- Parking fees (standard in Hawaii)
- A long drive from some of the main attractions (The Big Island is, well, Big, so this is the case for every resort on the Big Island)
- Certain areas can have spotty wifi
Pros:
- Plenty of restaurants and 24-7 in-room dining
- Location, location, location. You can’t beat Hapuna Beach!
- Hapuna Golf is steps away.
- Separate adults-only and family pools, each with separate hot tubs.
- Full-service spa for massages, body treatments, facials and more.
- Cultural activities, including Ukelele lessons
- Shared amenities with sister-resort Mauna Kea Beach Hotel
Westin Hapuna Beach vs. Mauna Kea Beach Hotel
There is no comparison, as Westin Hapuna Beach and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel are all part of Mauna Kea Resort! You can use the amenities at one while staying at the other.
As a Hawaii Travel Agent, I lean toward Mauna Kea for honeymooners and Westin Hapuna for families. That said, it can truly go either way! Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is undergoing significant renovations until 2025 (I have a sneak peek of what the rooms will look like on YouTube!) I’ll be visiting shortly after it’s finished to update you.
That said, Mauna Kea is still open during the updates. One tower at a time will be closed for renovations, so the guest experience should not be affected.
