The best snorkeling on the Big Island of Hawaii

Whether you’re planning a Big Island vacation or a Big Island honeymoon, you might be looking for the best snorkeling on the Big Island. The Big Island is my second favorite place in Hawaii for snorkeling (just behind Maui) and easily has some of the best snorkeling spots in Hawaii!

The best snorkeling on the Big Island

Here are the 5 best places to snorkel on the Big Island. Plus, there’s an added bonus at the bottom for a unique Big Island snorkeling experience. By the way, don’t forget to rent a car on the Big Island!

The Big Island is Big and has little public transportation, so you’ll definitely need a rental car. I recommend Discount Hawaii Car Rental for the best pricing and availability with all major car rental brands.

Now, let’s get to the best snorkeling on the Big Island!

1. Kealakekua Bay (Captain Cook Monument)

Kealakekua Bay, where you’ll find the Captain Cook Monument, is one of the best places to snorkel in all of Hawaii! It’s my #1 recommendation for snorkeling on the Big Island. The only downside is that it can be a little difficult to access.

The bay’s clear waters and diverse coral reefs provide a habitat for a variety of marine life, including tropical fish, sea turtles, and often, pods of spinner dolphins!

Accessing the bay can be a bit of an adventure; you can choose between a challenging hike down a steep trail or a more leisurely boat tour. Kayaking is another option. While I recommend the hike as one of the best hikes on the Big Island, I would try a boat tour if snorkeling is your #1 goal!

• Kealakekua Afternoon snorkel with Fair Wind Cruises – I do recommend morning, but this is good if you don’t want to get up early!
• Kayak and snorkel tour with Kona Boys, if boats aren’t for you!
• Historical Dinner Cruise of Kealakekua Bay by Body Glove (best for those who want to see it, but not snorkel)

Hiking down to Kealakekua Bay? No problem! Hiking back up? That’s a different story!

2. Honaunau Bay (Two Step)

Honaunau Bay, often known as “Two Step,” is a favorite among snorkelers for its easy water entry and rich marine life. The bay’s name comes from the natural lava rock steps that lead directly into the water, providing a convenient and safe entry point.

This area of vibrant coral reefs teems with tropical fish, sea turtles, and the occasional manta ray. The calm, clear waters make it an ideal spot for both beginners and experienced snorkelers. Adjacent to the bay is the Pu’uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park, one of the best historical sites on the Big Island. Make sure you don’t miss it!

3. Kahalu’u Beach Park

Kahalu’u Beach Park offers some of the best snorkeling on the Big Island and is known for its calm, shallow waters and abundant marine life. The bay is protected by a natural rock barrier, creating a safe and serene environment for snorkelers.

Here you’ll find a variety of tropical fish, sea turtles, and vibrant coral formations. The park also offers amenities such as restrooms, picnic tables, and equipment rentals, making it a convenient spot for families and beginners. 

4. Mauna Kea Beach (Kauna’oa Bay)

Mauna Kea Beach, located in Kauna’oa Bay, has pristine white sands and clear, calm waters. The bay’s crescent shape provides a sheltered environment, making it ideal for snorkeling. The underwater landscape features vibrant coral reefs and a variety of marine life, including tropical fish and occasional manta rays.

The beach is part of the Mauna Kea Resort and offers amenities such as restrooms, showers, and dining options. Parking for the beach can be limited, so arriving early is recommended to secure a spot.

5. Puako Bay

Puako Bay is a secluded snorkeling spot known for its diverse marine life and vibrant coral gardens. The bay’s relatively untouched underwater ecosystem offers a unique opportunity to encounter rare and exotic marine species.

The bay is accessible via a short walk from the Puako General Store, and parking is available along the road. The area is less developed, providing a more natural and tranquil snorkeling experience.

Bonus: Snorkeling with Manta Rays!

Snorkeling with manta rays on the Big Island of Hawaii is unique to the Big Island and a truly uniqe experiece! As the sun sets, you can join these gentle giants who are drawn by the glow of underwater lights that attract plankton.

I recommend the manta ray snorkeling with Hang Loose Boat Tours.
