Sandals Resorts vs. Secrets Resorts
Two brands quickly come to mind when you think of adults-only, all-inclusive vacations. Secrets Resorts and Sandals Resorts. So, which is better? Sandals Resorts vs. Secrets Resorts?
Both offer beautiful destinations, amazing service, and top-notch amenities—but they’re not exactly the same.
Both Secrets and Sandals Resorts cater to couples, but Sandals takes it a step further. Location can be a huge factor depending on whether you want a cheap, quick flight (think Cancun) or a more exotic location like Saint Vincent.
These are just some of the factors that can help you decide whether Secrets Resorts or Sandals Resorts is right for you!
Today, we’ll examine what makes Sandals and Secrets unique, from their locations and accommodations to dining options, activities, and overall feel.
Secrets Resorts vs. Sandals Resorts
Before we get started, let me introduce myself. My name is Amy, and I’m a travel agent specializing in honeymoons, destination weddings, and family vacations.
Years ago, I started with Hawaii but have branched into Mexico and the Caribbean, and now I am a top travel agent with both Sandals Resorts and AMR Resorts (who owns Secrets).
So, I guess you could say I am the one to ask when you want to know about Sandals Resorts vs. Secrets Resorts!

Secrets Resorts vs. Sandals Resorts target audience
One of the biggest differences between Sandals Resorts and Secrets Resorts is who they’re designed for. Understanding their target audience can help you quickly narrow down your options.
- Sandals Resorts: Sandals are all about romance, and while not couples-only, they are “couples-oriented.” These resorts cater to partners looking for an intimate getaway, whether a honeymoon, an anniversary, or a romantic escape. In fact, you won’t find anything but king beds at Sandals Resorts because they are truly designed for couples!
- Secrets Resorts: Secrets, on the other hand, is adults-only, which means absolutely no kids but a more flexible vibe. Now, Secrets is the most couple-oriented compared to sister resorts like Dreams or Breathless. Still, unlike Sandals, you’ll find rooms with multiple beds if traveling with friends or family. Whether you’re looking for romance or just an upscale, kid-free zone to relax and unwind, Secrets offers a lot of versatility.
They’re both a great fit if you’re planning a romantic vacation! If you’re looking for a more party-vibe, I recommend Secrets’ sister brand, Breathless Resorts.
I also have to mention one of my favorite resorts, Hyatt Zilara Cancun, which is another fantastic couple-oriented adults-only resort.
Sandals Resorts Locations vs. Secrets Resort Locations
Another key difference between Sandals Resorts and Secrets Resorts is their locations. Both brands offer beautiful destinations, but the locations vary quite a bit.
- Sandals Resorts: Sandals has resorts in iconic tropical destinations like Jamaica, St. Lucia, Barbados, the Bahamas, and Antigua. Each location offers crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and a laid-back island vibe. The downside? You won’t find Sandals Resorts in Mexico or the Dominican Republic, typically less expensive options for all-inclusive travel. I have a blog post with all the Sandals Resorts Locations so make sure to check it out!
- Secrets Resorts: Secrets offers a bit more variety in terms of geography. While it also has stunning resorts in the Caribbean, Secrets is particularly well-known for its properties in Mexico, with locations along the Riviera Maya, Cancun, Los Cabos, and Puerto Vallarta. It’s also expanded into Central America and Europe, giving travelers more options. If you’re looking for diversity in destinations or have your heart set on Mexico, Secrets will be the best fit.
Ultimately, it may come down to location, with Secrets having a bit of an edge, especially for those (like me) who love Mexico!
Sandals and Secrets Resorts accommodations
Sandals Resorts and Secrets Resorts offer luxurious accommodations, but their signature styles and perks differ.
- Sandals Resorts: Sandals takes luxury to the next level by focusing on creating unforgettable, romantic experiences. Some locations offer overwater bungalows, a standout option for couples seeking something extraordinary. All Sandals Resorts have “Butler” level accommodations, the nicest (and most expensive) rooms, and a Butler to help with all your needs.
- Secrets Resorts: Secrets also offers high-end accommodations with a more contemporary flair. Secrets is known for its spacious layouts and modern design, making the rooms feel fresh and sophisticated. You won’t find overwater bungalows, but swim-out rooms are common and highly recommended.

accommodation types
There are three accommodation categories at Sandals, Luxury, Club, and Butler. You can read more about that here: Sandals Resort Room Categories – Luxury vs. Club vs. Butler.

Secrets offers a more simple option: regular and Preferred Club. Guests who opt for Preferred Club status enjoy premium perks, which vary by resort but often include access to a private lounge offering premium beverages, hors d’oeuvres, and desserts, as well as upgraded room amenities like enhanced minibars, luxury bath products, and pillow menus.
Preferred Club members also gain access to private areas such as exclusive pools or beach sections, and some have Preferred-only restaurants.
If you’re planning a honeymoon or another special occasion, I recommend at least the Club level at Sandals and the Preferred Club at Secrets!
Impressions by Secrets
I want to note that Impressions by Secrets offers similar Butler accommodations to Sandals Resorts. However, they are a separate resort, and only select Secrets Resort have them nearby. So, I am not mentioning Impressions today, but contact me if you’d like to learn more!

Dining at Secrets vs. Sandals resorts
This one is a complete tie. Both Sandals Resorts and Secrets Resorts are committed to offering top-notch dining options.
- Sandals Resorts: Sandals prides itself on providing gourmet dining experiences with a variety of cuisines. Each resort typically features specialty restaurants, from Italian trattorias and French bistros to beachfront seafood grills and authentic Caribbean flavors. Additionally, Sandals includes premium drinks with unlimited pours of top-shelf liquors, wine, and craft cocktails as part of their all-inclusive package.
- Secrets Resorts: Secrets also excels in dining, offering diverse and sophisticated culinary experiences. Their restaurants feature international menus, including Mexican, Italian, Pan-Asian, and Mediterranean cuisines. Secrets is particularly known for its 24-hour dining options, including room service, allowing you to enjoy gourmet meals anytime, anywhere. Like Sandals, Secrets also offers unlimited drinks, including premium spirits and fine wines.
While Sandals and Secrets Resorts both offer some of the best all-inclusive dining options around, it’s important to note that room service is not included in Sandal’s “luxury” room categories. If you’re on a budget, this alone could make Secrets the easy choice.
Secrets Akumal is a personal favorite for me with fantastic restaurants.
Activities at Sandals Vs. Secrets
Sandals Resorts and Secrets Resorts offer plenty to do to keep you entertained, but their activities and entertainment styles cater to slightly different audiences.
- Sandals Resorts: Sandals is known for its emphasis on water-based activities and romantic experiences. Guests can enjoy unlimited access to snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, and even scuba diving at some locations. Many Sandals locations also have top-rated golf courses. Some Sandals Resorts have more lively entertainment, while some are more laid-back.
- Secrets Resorts: Secrets provides a wider range of activities that appeal to couples and groups alike. During the day, you’ll find options like yoga classes, tequila tastings, mixology sessions, and water sports. While water activities are available, Secrets focuses more on versatile entertainment, such as beach volleyball, cooking classes, or cultural excursions. Evenings at Secrets tend to be lively, with themed parties, live performances, and sophisticated nightlife options like outdoor movies or casino nights.
Both brands deliver exceptional entertainment, but the best option for you may depend on your specific resort. That’s why working with a travel agent is so important! I can recommend the right resort in the right destination for you.
An open-air restaurant at Secrets Moxche also offers live music in the evenings.
pricing
Both Sandals Resorts and Secrets Resorts offer luxury experiences at different price points. While Sandals tends to have higher starter pricing, pricing can vary wildly depending on the time of year, room type, and more.
- Sandals Resorts: Sandals tends to be on the higher end of the pricing spectrum, but it’s important to consider what you’re getting for your money. Sandals is truly all-inclusive, with everything from premium dining and top-shelf drinks to water sports, scuba diving (if you’re certified), airport transfers, and gratuities covered in the upfront cost. Sandals offers the most if you’re looking for a worry-free experience where you don’t need to pull out your wallet – even for tips!
- Secrets Resorts: Secrets is often more competitively priced, especially when it comes to entry level. While their all-inclusive packages also cover dining, drinks, and most activities, there are some extras. You also need to factor in tipping (and please, tip well!) because unlike Sandals where tipping is forbidden, you can and SHOULD tip well at Secrets Resorts.
So, Sandals vs. Secrets Resorts, which is better?
Ultimately, the choice between Sandals and Secrets comes down to your priorities. If you value an ultra-premium, truly all-inclusive experience with lots of included perks, Sandals is a strong choice.
It’s hard to go wrong with Sandals in St. Lucia!
It’s especially good if you want to include golf and scuba diving and do not have to worry about tipping (unless you have a Butler!). Check out everything You Need to Know About Tipping at Sandals Resorts to learn more.
If you’re looking for a luxurious getaway that offers flexibility and great value, Secrets might be the better option for your budget. Many Secrets Resorts are also closer to the US, and you may find more economical flights if you want to make the most of your valuable vacation time!
