Travel Blog Income Report
This travel blog income report is a report on how much I made with my blog in April 2024. I haven’t done one of these in almost two years, but I noticed my blog income report from 2 years ago was getting a lot of views, so I thought it was time for another one!
What has changed since the last one? Well, I got hit by the dreaded Google Update—in fact, most bloggers did. I took a huge hit and lost about 90% of my Google traffic. Fortunately, I’ve always done well on Pinterest, and I am diversifying with things like Flipboard, TikTok, Reddit, and Instagram. I am also re-doing old content in hopes of making it better quality and updated.
So, while my travel blog income report for April 2024 is less than it was two years ago, it has never been my primary income, and I have lots of ideas in the works to get more traffic again.
How do bloggers make money?
If you want to know how travel bloggers make money, this might help answer that question. I’m often asked how travel bloggers make money, and the best way for me to explain it is to show you.
It is important to note that this is how much I received in April 2024, not how much I earned. In most cases, the money you earn as a travel blogger happens weeks or even months before.
I count my travel blog income as money that came into my bank account for that particular month. Even though I probably earned that money weeks or months prior.
Why share an income report?
The common question is, “Why would you share an income report?!” The answer is that income reports inspired me – no matter how much they were – when I started blogging.
For example, Michelle of Making Sense of Cents inspired me to take blogging seriously. I started blogging in 2010 (for fun) but didn’t know how to monetize my blog, so I decided to learn how to do just that.
Whether a blogger makes $100, $1,000, or $10,000 per month, it can be inspiring for someone.
Am I a full-time travel blogger?
I have multiple income streams, and travel blogging is one of them. I am a full-time entrepreneur, but I have multiple streams of income, including:
- Another unrelated business (I sold my photography business in 2022, but my husband and I run a local bounce house and party rental business in Northwest Arkansas.)
- I run a travel agency, where I earn money booking trips for clients. (This is still my most significant source of income as of 2024.) You’ll see links about working with me all over my website.
- I have additional side income streams, although these are much smaller now than they used to be, as I do not put effort into them.
average income of a travel blogger
There are many ways to make money blogging, including brand sponsorships, ads, affiliates, social media following, and more.
Travel bloggers make $1 per month, and travel bloggers make over $100,000 in one month. Sharing an average is impossible since most bloggers do not publish their income reports.
The truth is that many travel bloggers don’t make much money. Many of those of us who did earn a decent income were hit with the “helpful” content update and are scrambling for more ways to get traffic since this update has been anything but helpful.
Travel blogger income report
Here is my travel blogger income report for April 2024. I also think it’s important to share some stats, so my page views for April 2024: 21,754, down from 30,283 in March. The numbers are slowly climbing back up, but I did take quite a hit.
New blog posts for April 2024
I spent almost half of April 2024 traveling, but that didn’t stop me from creating new blog posts and YouTube content! Here are some of my newest blog posts from April:
- Sandals Resorts that are closest to the airports
- Hana-Maui Resort Review (one of the places I stayed in April)
- 3 reasons to work with a Travel Agent
We also posted two videos on YouTube twice a week, and we got married! April was a busy month.
How do bloggers make money?
In April 2024, I earned money through my blog through ad income and affiliates.
I am creating a course for travel agents, and I have some guides I made a while back that I need to update and sell on my site. As of now, I am not doing either of those.
My YouTube channel was monetized about a year ago, so I make a tiny bit of income from there which I’ll share here.
Ad income
You may see some of the ads on my blog. This is one way that I passively make money as a travel blogger. I wrote a post that is a Mediavine review, and although it needs updating, it shares what it means to partner with Mediavine.
Total income from ads in April from Mediavine: $1390.29
I also have a small side blog that was hit HARD by the Google Update, but it’s still monetized. It made $48.81 in April 2024.
YouTube: My YouTube ad income was $180.69
Total: $1619.79
Affiliate Income
Affiliates are one of the most popular ways that travel bloggers earn money. I primarily earn affiliate income from car rentals, hotels, excursions, and travel gear on Amazon.
Affiliate income is great because even though it’s not a ton of money, it can come from all different types of transactions. For example, someone might click an affiliate link for a rental car on my blog and make a reservation.
I also earn affiliate income through Amazon through direct links (such as those below) and my Amazon storefront.
In April 2024, I earned money through four different affiliate companies. I work with several affiliates, but some do not pay out until a certain threshold has been reached.
Discount Rental Cars – $304. I earn a commission through Discount Hawaii Rental Cars and Discount USA Rental Cars. However, I would recommend them even if I didn’t! They have the best prices on rental cars, and you don’t have to pay until you pick up the car. Most of my revenue through Discount Rental Cars is through cars rented in Hawaii.
Amazon – $370.89. I earned money through direct links on my blog and my Amazon storefront.
Shareasale – $180.01. The majority of my Shareasale commissions are through Viator. I am also a Travel Agent through Viator, so I make more money as a Travel Agent but have some affiliate links scattered throughout my blog.
Total income from affiliates in April 2024: $854.90
What about expenses?
As a travel blogger, I also have expenses. These expenses include domain, hosting through Siteground, Canva Pro, and others.
Let me know in the comments if you’d like to learn more about my expenses! I can write a separate blog post about them or include them in my monthly income report. For now, I will leave it as-is, but know that running a travel blog is not free!
Total travel BLOG income for June
My total income from travel blogging in June was $2474.67. Although lower than I’d like, traffic and income are gradually increasing, and I will share my income reports so you can follow along.
